the journey

Six years of interventions and call-to-actions on the streets of São Paulo helped me learn ways to provoke and speed up behavior change, through actions that promote responsible urban disobedience. The power of the example is infinitely superior to the power of a speech. Today, I believe a lot more in prototypes than in exhaustively planned projects. After this learning process I feel confident in start the next journey, named Blue City. The projects and actions developed under the alias Cafenarua are listed below:

blue city

Blue City is a multimedia project co-coordinated by Mesa&Cadeira and collaboratively designed. The project consists in a platform that helps people find a buried river anywhere in the city of Sao Paulo.

Blue City wants to transform our relationship with water in cities. For centuries cities have treated their rivers as sewage channels and the result is we can't enjoy their presence and water. We want to reveal marginalized rivers. We started in São Paulo, Brazil. São Paulo has more than 300 polluted and buried rivers.

Cafenarua: concept, design and production. Partnership: Mesa&Cadeira.

Guests: Lucas Mello, Denis Russo, Paula Dib, Drica Guzzi, José Bueno, Luiz de Campos Jr, Rodrigo Machado, Debora Pill, Alisson Louback, Dimitri Lima, Henrique Perigo, Bruno Bertogna, Alex Full, Rafael Liminha and Mariana Orlow. Sponsorship: crowdfunding.

live pinheiros river

Artistic project that installed a mural on Pinheiros River bike path, with the story of the river.

Have you ever thought that, if Pinheiros river were clean, São Paulo would have a beach? Think about it. A park right in front of a clean river. Take a walk or ride a bike on its banks after work. Lie down and sunbathe by the riverside. We imagine this future. We are going to transform Pinheiros river in this life. Live Pinheiros River proposes the occupation of its banks.

Cafenarua: concept, design and production. Partnership: Superinteressante Magazine. Guest: artist Paulo Ito.

Sponsorship: Superinteressante Magazine, Liv Drinks, Urban Arts and crowdfunding. Institutional Support: Rios e Ruas, EMAE and CPTM.

the crosswalk

Call-to-action that resulted in a crosswalk collaborative painted. The action had a huge repercussion on social media, reaching more than 25 thousand people.

For three years our neighborhood asked the Municipality for a crosswalk in a busy street close to a square attended by parents and their kids. The answer was always that they were checking the need. One day we decided to paint it ourselves. We bought a can of painting and some brushes and in one Sunday afternoon we painted a crosswalk. We were about ten people and between us there was a journalist of a known blog. That week, he wrote about the crosswalk painting and published the story on social media. About 25 thousand people read the story. Two weeks later, the municipal service responsible for traffic erased our crosswalk and painted a new one.

friendly block pompeia

Project that delimitaded the block as a work unity and performed artistic interventions, urban furniture, graphic design and community awareness.

Imagine working on a whole block as a unity? That is how Friendly Block sees cities. Blocks are like pieces of a puzzle: houses, buildings, shops surrounded by a connection ring: the sidewalk. The sidewalk is where we meet our neighbors, people we share much more of our lives than we often realize. How great would be if this sharing were more conscious!

Guests: artists Rodrigo Machado and Remo. Sponsorship: Incorporadora Ink.

friendly block vila mascote

Project that delimitaded the block as a work unity and performed artistic interventions, urban furniture, graphic design and community awareness.

And what happens when there is no sidewalk? Well, when there isn't one, we create it. The sidewalk is pedestrian right. At Vila Mascote, a neighborhood where the doors of the houses opened straight to the street, the solution was to paint a blue band to delimit the sidewalk. And it worked! When we use colors to make dreams tangible, the result is always good.

Guests: artistas Alex Romano and Risada. Sponsorship: Incorporadora Sabiá.

recycled street gallery

Artistic installation that transformed a siding in a mural made of recycled wood, in a neighbourhood of São Paulo.

Let's bring together art, income generation and trash to transform the siding of a building. That is how the recycled art panel was born. It is the result of the work made by the artist Rodrigo Machado, with the support of the project Pimp My Carroça and the collaboration of trash pickers of the neighborhood. The block thanks kindness.

come to edite

Revitalization of a square at the neighborhood of Jardim Edite, São Paulo. The project involved community activation, artistic interventions, music, workshop for kids and street food.

During a whole year, our focus was to activate a square Arlindo Rossi, located in front of a residential complex named Jardim Edite, that had been opened just a few months ago. The goal was to revival the sense of community of the former neighborhood, favela Jardim Edite. Neighbors had been reallocated to other places until the construction of the complex was finished. The project had different stages and several call-to-actions, like tennis classes proposed by the residents themselves, picnics and street barbecues, screening with soccer games and a lot of artistic activities for kids. São Paulo's Municipality also collaborated with a new playground and fitness equipment.

edite graffiti gallery

Revitalization of a square at the neighborhood of Jardim Edite, São Paulo. The project involved community activation, artistic interventions, music, workshop for kids and street food.

A long blue wall in one of the most emblematic places of São Paulo could only turn into an art gallery with the best artists ever! The gallery is located on the wall of the housing complex Jardim Edite, close to one of the most famous bridges of the city. Artists Mundano, Primat, Katia Suzue, Thiago Goms and Ozi Stencl, with the support of the community, transformed the place in a city sightseeing.

edite infant gallery

Revitalization of a square at the neighborhood of Jardim Edite, São Paulo. The project involved community activation, artistic interventions, music, workshop for kids and street food.

Another call-to-action created during 'Come to Edite' was a graffiti gallery with the participation of kids of the neighborhood. The artists of Edite's Gallery donated their time during a weekend to share their knowledge with about 50 children. The result was more than 15 screens painted together and an amazing creativity shown by kids. The sequence of sidings became the wall of a ground where more houses will be built for population. Inspiring.

lunch at the square

Project that aimed to encourage the habit of having lunch at a square once a week, in the neighborhood of Vila Madalena, São Paulo.

During three months, we created a funny experiment. What if we change, once a week, our lunch at home or restaurant for a picnic at a square? The aim was to rescue the tradition of preparing picnics, placing a towel under a tree and just relax for a few hours. Some people decided to sell some snacks, others preferred just split them. In the end, the most important were the conversations born from these meetings, the connection with the city and its squares.

coruja project

Revitalization project of a urban space named Coruja Linear Park, in Vila Madalena, São Paulo. The project consisted in engaging the community to find new possibilities for the space. During six months the community participated in meetings and talks. The project resulted in an open-air art gallery, an orchard, artistic interventions and urban furniture. It was showcased at X Architecture Biennial, in São Paulo.

Let’s create new uses for Coruja’s Linear Park? That is how our first urban intervention project invited residents of Vila Madalena and Vila Beatriz, two neighborhoods located in São Paulo, Brazil. The urban space, near Corujas’s Square, was at the time a forgotten corner. In partnership with Acupuntura Urbana, we designed a project that invited the community to co-create the space. The process lasted one year and resulted in call-to-actions such as Coruja’s Graffiti Gallery and School at the Square.

Coruja's Graffity Gallery was one of the call-to-actions born from Coruja's Project. It had two editions and the participation of ten street artists. Coruja's Linear Park is now a place full of life and colors. It became a contemplation space, a refuge in the middle of the big city of São Paulo. Also, some works were sold to help the project School at the Square.

school at the square

Action that grew out of Coruja Project. During six months a group of kids of the sixth grade of EMEF Olavo Pezzotti had geography, history and art lessons taking place at Coruja Linear Park, in a weekly expedition.

Through School at the Square, we connected education, permaculture and public space. Geography, history and art classes were substituted for a weekly expedition to Coruja's Linear Park. The sixth grade on EMEF Olavo Pezzoti colaborated during six months with the transformation of the urban space under the leadership of Peter Webb. Together we created a little orchard, a flower garden and we learned to use materials that mosto of the time are considered trash.

Parceria: Acupuntura Urbana. Convidado: permacultor Peter Webb. Patrocínio: financiamento coletivo.
